I am what I am. If you don't like it, don't read here.
*********************************************************
Several years ago, after several outages and extended outages and then being locked out of my journal and forced to change my password without advanced warning or notice, I stopped paying LiveJournal for my account and instead switched to a Basic account type.
Since that time, I have promised myself that if at any point I felt that LiveJournal management made up to me for all the things they've done that I've disagreed with that I would -love- to start giving them my money again. Instead I've seen one thing after another after another that has made me despise the people who run this place and vow again and again not to pay for my journal and to keep my Basic account. It's come to the point where if I didn't have the friends that I do using this place I would be long gone.
Several months ago, the LiveJournal management team took away the ability to make Basic accounts but grandfathered in the Basic accounts that had been created previous to the decision and promised that those accounts would remain unchanged.
As of today, the LiveJournal management team has once again gone back on one of their promises: To keep Basic accounts ad-free.
As of today anyone not logged into their LiveJournal account or anyone who is reading my journal that doesn't have a LiveJournal account of their own will see ads. These ads are not something I have control over, they are not something that I endorse and they can be advertisements for anything LiveJournal wants to advertise... that is to say political ads, ads for Walmart, ads for dating places, weight loss ads or anything else. I have no choice in this matter except to pay people I whole heartedly disagree with and feel don't care about my feelings as a consumer of their product and I refuse to do that.
So, to those of you who are reading this without a journal account, I don't encourage you to sign up so you don't see these ads, in fact, just the opposite. If you sign up, it's only more people that the LiveJournal management can manipulate and lie to. I encourage you, instead, to use Firefox to view LiveJournal (at least LiveJournal if not use it in general) and install into Firefox the ad-block add on. You can get it here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865. Using this add on is against LiveJournal's policies, but they can't do anything about it. Given how frequently they treat their users this way... taking advantage of things their users can't do anything about... I feel no negative emotions about encouraging you to do this.
